10 Things about "Windows 10"

After months of speculation and plenty of leaks, Microsoft has given the world its first official look at the next version of Windows. The biggest surprise is its name - Windows 10. While some of the new features are predictable, others come as surprises. It's clear that Microsoft has gone back to the drawing board after enduring endless criticism of its bold Windows 8 strategy and redesign. The reinvented Windows tries to combine the best of both worlds. 1. Windows 10 will be designed to appeal to office workers After years of dealing with complaints that Windows 8 was too different to roll out in large-scale corporate environments and would require massive resources to be spent on retraining users, Microsoft has decided to appeal to that crowd by incorporating familiar elements and hiding features that won't be applicable. The new Start menu is a prime example of this.
2. ...and corporate IT managers On the management side, Windows 10 promises better security, easier manageability, and improved capabilities for dealing with today's security threats. There will also be improved methods of installing and dealing with volume licenses, making the upgrade process easier. Custom app stores will help corporate environments to deal with software deployments and permissions. There is still a huge install base of Windows XP machines in office environments which work just fine, but Microsoft's new features might be tempting enough for managers to finally decide that an upgrade is worthwhile.
3. Windows 10 will scale from small smartphones to giant data centres The Windows 10 name will apply to future versions of Windows Phone as well as Windows on tablets, desktop PCs and hybrid portable devices. The same experience will carry over to the Xbox One console and potentially other devices as well. Users will see an interface suited to their device type, screen size and input methods, so for example, the full-screen Start UI will not necessarily be a part of the desktop usage experience, but will appear for touch-first tablet users. There will even be a way for users to switch between the two modes, especially if they use tablets with detachable or foldable keyboards.
4. The new Start menu will combine Windows 7's usability with Windows 8's tiles While a lot might change between now and the final release of Windows 10, previews indicate a two-column Start menu with old-style icons for pinned or recent programs on the left, and live tiles on the right displaying updates and information. The tiles will be customisable, though at their smallest size they will be functionally identical to pinned shortcuts.5. Modern apps will run in windows on the desktop Desktop users will be able to run Modern apps (downloaded from the Windows store) on the desktop just like other apps. They will be resizable and can be pinned to the taskbar. Important functions will be accessible through a context menu. 6. Virtual Desktops are finally coming to Windows A mainstay of OS X and most Linux distributions for years, virtual desktops have remained a niche feature on Windows. In another move aimed at appeasing hardcore desktop users, virtual desktops are now baked right in. A new Task View will let you see an overview of all running apps and arrange them between desktops. 7. Snap has also been improved You can now quickly tile four apps at once on the Windows 10 desktop just by dragging them to the corners of your screen. You'll see suggestions for filling up your screen so that you don't have to deal with overlapping windows. Desktop users with large monitors will rejoice. 8. Search and power user features will be improved The new search feature combines local and Web results. You can begin searching just by typing when the Start menu is open, which means you can continue to hit the Start button and just start typing exactly like in Windows 8. Microsoft has another treat for power users - finally, you can use a simple Ctrl+V shortcut to paste text into the Command Prompt. 9. The Charms bar isn't going anywhere Just like with the Start screen, Microsoft isn't completely removing all vestiges of Windows 8. The Charms bar remains, though most probably only visible to users of touch-first devices. It will be improved, and those Windows 8 users who are familiar with it can continue to use it. 10. There's much more to come Microsoft has teased that there are plenty of good reasons for its decision to skip a Windows 9 and jump two version numbers ahead. We hope to see many more improvements and refinements of the concepts that have been demonstrated so far. With public beta releases not too far away, it's going to be an eventful year leading up to the final release of Windows 10.

Top five high-paying companies for software engineers

While the media took note of the news that pre-IPO Twitter paid engineer Christopher Fry more than $10 million in compensation last year, the uber-competitive talent hunt comes as no surprise in the tech world.

There, innovation and top-notch leadership are the typically the basis for a firm's future value, which is why both small and large firms can pay handsomely for software engineers.

However, the highest-paying company for software engineers isn't a sexy newly public company or a hot pre-IPO firm, according to jobs site Glassdoor.com. It's networking equipment maker Juniper Networks, founded in 1996 and based in Sunnyvale, Calif., south of San Francisco. The average base for the company's software engineers: $159,990.

Social media site Facebook is No. 9 with $121,507. Meanwhile, the highest-paid engineering executive disclosed in proxy filings as a named executive officer was Michael Schroepfer, CTO and VP of engineering of Facebook, who had total pay of $20.7 million last year, according to executive compensation firm Equilar.

Twitter comes in at No. 5 in Glassdoor's list of highest-paying engineering firms, offering an average base of $124,863.

While Fry earned $10.3 million last year, his salary was only $145,513. He earned more than $10 million in stock awards and $100,000 as a bonus. While he is one of Twitter's highest-paid employees as senior vice president of engineering, he is relatively new to the company. He joined in April 2012 and was a vice president of engineering. Previously, he worked his way up at Salesforce.com, eventually becoming senior vice president of development.

Glassdoor, based in Sausalito, Calif., compiled its data from employee-reported salary information among companies with at least 50 software engineer salary reports over the past 12 months.

Here are the top five high-paying companies for software engineers and their average base salaries, according to Glassdoor.com.

1. Juniper Networks $159,990

2. LinkedIn $136,427

3. Yahoo $130,312

4. Google $127,143

5. Twitter $124,863

Google Stock Tops $1,000 a Share

For the first time ever, Google shares (NASDAQ: GOOG) have crossed the $1,000 a share mark. Google stock is soaring in early trading, up more than $110 a share, a gain of nearly 13 percent just today. It’s been a great 2013 for Google shareholders. The stock is up over 40 percent this year and over the last 5 years shares have surged almost 170 percent.

For investors who jumped on the Google bandwagon early when it went public nine years ago, the ride has been even sweeter. Those investors have been watching the stock since its IPO price, $85 a share.

The reason for today’s triple digit dot-com-like surge is its third-quarter earnings report that blew past Wall Street’s expectation. The company earned $3 billion in the three months that ended in September, compared with $2.2 billion in the same period last year.

Today’s surge means Google’s added $35 billion in market cap, which is more than the total size of Yahoo ($34.1 billion).

Google’s big day is having a halo effect across the tech sector. Facebook shares are up almost 4 percent today, above $54 a share. FB has now doubled this year, up 103 percent since Jan. 1.
The stock of another high flyer of the year is also surging today: Chipotle (CMG) is up $55 a share, a nearly 13% rise to $494 a share. And this year two other big momentum names of the S&P 500 have posted returns of over 200%: Best Buy is up 261.9%, and Netflix is up 259%.

Google is the latest company to cross the magical $1,000-a-share mark. Just last month Priceline’s stock hit the $1,000-a-share mark and another member of this elite club is Warren Buffett’s Berkshire Hathaway. But both Google and Priceline have a long way to go before catching shares of the Oracle of Omaha’s company. Berkshire shares currently trade at around $175,000 a share.

Chemical Weapons Watchdog Wins Nobel Peace Prize

Urging the destruction of an “entire category” of unconventional weapons, the Norwegian Nobel Committee awarded its 2013 Peace Prize on Friday to a modest and little-known United Nations-backed organization that has drawn sudden attention with a mission to ensure that Syria’s stocks of chemical arms are eradicated.

The award, to the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons, surprised some Nobel watchers partly because of the unprecedented nature of its current task: overseeing the destruction of a previously secret chemical weapons program quickly amid a raging civil war.

“We were aware that our work silently but surely was contributing to peace in the world,” Ahmet Uzumcu, the director general of the organization, told reporters at its headquarters in The Hague after the award was announced. “The last few weeks have brought this to the fore. The entire international community has been made aware of our work.”

Among diplomats, the prize was seen as the high point of a startling rise to prominence for an organization that had worked in relative obscurity. Some Syrians, however, took strong exception to the idea of lauding chemical weapons watchdogs when the bulk of the more than 100,000 deaths in Syria’s 31-month-old conflict have been caused by conventional weapons, like airstrikes and artillery and rocket fire.

Despite the urgency and danger of its task, the organization had not been seen as a likely winner. In the days leading up to the award, much attention was focused on individual candidates, including Malala Yousafzai, the 16-year-old Pakistani who risked her life to campaign for girls’ education and would have been the youngest recipient ever.

In its citation, the committee said the organization and the treaty under which it was founded in 1997 “have defined the use of chemical weapons as a taboo under international law.”

“Recent events in Syria, where chemical weapons have again been put to use, have underlined the need to enhance the efforts to do away with such weapons,” the citation said.

It was the second successive year that the panel, based in Oslo, had chosen an organization. The European Union won the 2012 prize.

Inspectors from the 189-member organization began arriving in Syria early this month after a chemical weapons attack killed hundreds of people on the outskirts of Damascus, the Syrian capital, on Aug. 21. Under a deal brokered by Russia and the United States, Syria agreed to join the treaty banning chemical weapons and become the 190th member of the organization.

The attack initially drew an American threat of military reprisal before Moscow and Washington reached a compromise arrangement to destroy Syria’s chemical weapons stocks under international supervision.

Mikhail S. Gorbachev, the former Soviet leader and the winner of the 1990 Nobel Peace Prize, hailed the award. “O.P.C.W. has worked tirelessly to rid the world of chemical weapons, and the organization is a deserved winner of the Nobel Peace Prize,” Mr. Gorbachev said in a statement issued by Green Cross International, an advocacy group based in Geneva that he founded, which has collaborated closely with the chemical weapons watchdog.

Angela Kane, the top United Nations disarmament official, who worked with the watchdog organization to lead an investigation into the Aug. 21 attack and other suspected uses of chemical weapons in Syria, said in a statement, “If he were alive today, Alfred Nobel would be gratified indeed that his committee has once again recognized disarmament for its great benefit to humanity.”

Thorbjorn Jagland, the former Norwegian prime minister who is chairman of the Nobel committee, said chemical weapons had been used by Hitler’s armies in their campaign of mass extermination and on many other occasions by states and terrorists. Mr. Jagland denied suggestions that the award represented a European-centered shift after last year’s award to the European Union. “It’s global,” he said.

The organization’s mission is to act as a watchdog in carrying out the Chemical Weapons Convention, which came into force in 1997 with four aims: to destroy all chemical weapons under international verification, to prevent the creation of new chemical weapons, to help countries protect themselves against chemical attack, and to foster international cooperation in the peaceful use of chemistry.

Since its creation, the organization has sent experts to carry out 5,000 inspections in 86 countries, working discreetly, almost shunning publicity, with the small number of signatory countries that acknowledge possessing chemical weapons. By far the biggest of these are Russia and the United States. Four countries besides Syria have not yet signed or ratified the treaty: Angola, Egypt, North Korea and South Sudan. Israel and Myanmar have signed the treaty, but their governments have not ratified it.

Snoop Dogg, Kate Upton Join Together For Trippy Hot Pockets Music

At the beginning of the video, Upton returns home to her apartment, telling a pal that an unnamed guy is "just a friend," but as she sits down to watch Larry King Live (where Snoop is extolling the deliciousness of Hot Pockets), she suddenly starts to hallucinate about joining the veteran rapper in song and shuffle-dance.

"Now let me give you an introduction/ to the master baker of this production," a red track suit-clad Snoop raps as he leads Upton on a stroll through a series of oversized baking paraphernalia, proclaiming that he can "bake anywhere."

The video features the pair traipsing amongst the clouds as cartoon sheep leap over their heads, sitting side-by-side in a futuristic rocket ship, and even jamming out on a piano together.

"You…got what I eat," Upton lip-syncs the chorus. "Now you say you're just a baker, but you're my Hot Pocket baker/ Oh baby you…got what I eat/ You got that hot buttery crust/ I need your hot buttery crust."

In addition to the superstar duo, Youtube star Kev Jumba also makes an appearance in the video alongside Oliver Cooper as the "butcher." A Larry King lookalike also makes a cameo, as well all rapper Bow Wow.

Malala Yousafzai wins European human rights prize

Pakistani teenage activist Malala Yousafzai, shot by the Taliban for fighting for girls' rights to education, was awarded the European Parliament's prestigious Sakharov human rights prize Thursday.

"She is an icon of courage for all teenagers who dare to pursue their aspirations and, like a candle, she lights a path out of darkness," said Joseph Daul, chairman of the center-right European People's Party in the European Parliament.

The 16-year-old was attacked last year while on a school bus in northwestern Pakistan, but recovered after medical treatment in Britain. She is also a favorite among experts and betting agencies to be named the winner of the Nobel Peace Prize on Friday.

Yousafzai started her campaigning by writing blogs in 2009 in which she described how the Taliban prevented girls like her from going to school.

She quickly rose to international fame after appearing in numerous interviews with foreign media outlets. Her growing profile attracted the Taliban's attention and led to frequent death threats.

"I was not worried about myself that much. I was worried about my father. We could not believe they would be so cruel as to kill a child, as I was 14 at the time," Yousafzai said in a television interview with "The Daily Show" on Tuesday.

Her book "I Am Malala: The Girl Who Stood Up for Education and Was Shot by the Taliban" is currently the second-best selling book on Amazon.com.

The Sakharov Prize for freedom of thought has been given by the European Parliament each year since 1988 to commemorate Soviet scientist and dissident Andrei Sakharov. Its past winners include Nelson Mandela and Burmese activist Aung San Suu Kyi.

Edward Snowden had also been nominated for the award by the Green group in the parliament for what it said was his "enormous service" to human rights and European citizens when he disclosed secret United States surveillance programs.

Yousafzai was chosen as the winner after a vote among the heads of all the political groups in the 750-member parliament.

Miss Philippines Megan Young, crowned Miss World

Miss Philippines, Megan Young, was crowned the winner of Saturday night's 2013 Miss World pageant at the Bali Nusa Dua Convention Centre in Indonesia.

"I promise to be the best Miss World ever," the 23-year-old said as she was crowned by last year's winner, Wenxia Yu.

Young, who was born in the United States, beat out 126 other women vying for the crown in the 63rd annual pageant. The brunette beauty moved to the Philippines when she was 10 years old and has been living there since, working as an actress and television host.

Miss France, Marine Lorphelin, 20, placed second and 22-year-old Miss Ghana, Carranzar Naa Okailey Shooter, came in third.

The 2013 Miss World pageant was initially slated to be held in the Indonesian capital, Jakarta, but was moved to the resort island of Bali amid security concerns.

Police said there were no demonstrations or protests during the pageant, where security was heightened in fear of an attack.

Leading up the pageant, the Islamic Defenders' Front staged protests over the revealing (in their opinion) clothing worn during Miss World pageants. Islamic protesters denounced the pageant, calling it insulting to have women wearing bikinis and form-fitting evening attire in Indonesia, the most populous mostly Muslim nation in the world.

The Jakarta Post said groups were calling for the government to completely shut down the competition, but instead, moved it to Bali three weeks ago.

Kate Upton poses wearing no makeup

Kate Upton has graced the covers of Vogue, Cosmopolitan and Vanity Fair, but the buxom supermodel proved she's far from perfect when she returned from the gym in Paris, France, on Tuesday, Oct. 1. Wearing no makeup, the 21-year-old Michigan native was all smiles post-workout.

Despite a few blemishes, there's no denying that Kate is a stunning woman. After all, the recently crowned Model of the Year just nabbed her third Sports Illustrated cover in two years!
The blond beauty has been making the rounds in the City of Light, sitting front row at Chanel and strutting her stuff in the Louis Vuitton show during Paris Fashion Week.

The secret to Kate's success is a positive attitude, according to her mom Shelly, a former Texas state tennis champion. "She really is just so enthusiastic about everything. And when she's excited about something, she gives it her best," the model's mom told Allure Sept. 9. "I just am so proud about how she has handled all the pressure that goes along with all the successes that are amazing as well. She seems to take it in stride and doesn't seem to be inhibited at all."

Shelly is especially proud of Kate's refusal to lose weight in a size-obsessed industry. "She really has been such a vibrant person—she leads a well-balanced life, and she wants to eat healthy. We've always eaten healthy as a family growing up," she shared. "And she's definitely always known what she wanted."

Rihanna Debuts "Pour It Up" Music Video, Wears Dollar Bills and Twerks

If there's anyone who can make Miley Cyrus' twerking and teddy bear leotard look tame, it would have to be Rihanna. The "Diamonds" singer debuted her new music video for sultry hit "Pour It Up" on Wednesday, Oct. 2, and she didn't hold back when it came to turning up the shock factor.

In the green smoke-filled video, Rihanna, 25, perches haughtily on a golden throne in a diamond bikini top that just barely covers her nipples, coupled with tiny red bikini bottoms covered in dollar bills and elbow-length black leather gloves.

The songstress tops off the look with dollar bill-print platform heels, dark shades and a blonde wig of tight curls.

Though the video features several different women sliding up and down poles amid a hail of dollar bills, it's Rihanna's turn as a stripper, twerking up against the throne, the pole, and the ground, that ultimately gives the video its over-the-edge appeal.

Though Rihanna's legion of fans are already showering their praise for the sexy singer, the video itself -- which Rihanna co-directed -- is reportedly already in the process of getting banned for its raunchy content.

"I bet you never seen bitches twerk on water," she tweeted on Wednesday.

Britney Spears’s ‘Work Bitch’ Music Video Is Flawless, Classic Britney

Britney Spears invited us all on a journey back in time late Tuesday night, when she debuted the music video for her club-banger of a new track, “Work Bitch.” The video is classic Britney. In a sex-dripping, fierce fashion we haven’t seen from her in years, she, quite simply, gets to work. Bitch.

It’s a vintage Britney video, in every absurd and amazing meaning of that label. It’s utterly nonsensical, yet tantalizing.

She’s gyrating against a white wall, flanked by female backup dancers dressed in leather. She’s gazing at herself sultrily at a vanity in the middle of a barren desert. Now the leather-clad backup dancers join her on a white platform for some floor choreography in the middle of said barren desert.

Such a sexy barren desert.

Britney then throws down some spritely choreography in what looks like an underground club. Then there’s some sensuous choreography in what looks like a different underground club. Then she wields a riding crop and whips some backup dancer who is ball-gagged and on a leash for some kinky choreography in what looks like yet another different underground club.

There are mannequins that are blown up. There is Britney Spears in a neon-pink ball gown on a lily pad cooing for the camera. This video, you see, is a lot. And we want it all.
