The Aga Khan is a British citizen and the 49th hereditary Imam of Ismaili Shi’as, and both he and Prince Rahim are believed by their followers to be direct descendents of the prophet Mohamed.
Although Rahim and Spears are a prince and princess, they aren’t royal: their titles come from the sense that the Aga Khan family originally came from a family that was part of the Iraninan royal dynasty.
After an engagement of only four months, Spears, 25, and Khan, 41, exchanged vows at the Bellerive Castle in Genevai, Switzerland on Saturday, August 31.
The couple was married in a traditional Muslim ceremony, with Spears wearing an ivory sari with gold embroidery by Indian designer Manav Gangwani Couture and elaborate silver jewelry, according to the Huffington Post. Spears converted to Islam before the ceremony.
Rahim also dressed in white and gold for the wedding.
Spears tweeted a photo of herself in her wedding dress, writing, “Thank you @ManavGangwani for the beyond-gorgeous sari! And thank you @NaomiCampbell for the introduction Xx.”
Spears was once called “the next Cindy Crawfod” and made her debut at New York Fashion Week in November 2008. Since then, she’s appeared on the covers of French Elle, Chinese Vogue and Dazed & Confused. She’s signed to New York’s NEXT models.
Spears has appeared in campaigns for Prada and Diane von Furstenberg and was recently announced as the face of Escada’s Fall/Winger 2013 campaign. She’s walked the catwalk for Chanel, Lanvin, Yves Saint Laurent, Givenchy and Calvin Klein, among others.
The Aga Khan family has a history of marrying celebrity wives: Rahim’s grandfather was married to Rita Hayworth. Rahim’s father, the current Aga Khan, was married to supermodel Sarah Croker-Poole and after they divorced he remarried to German pop star Gabriele Renate Homey, who he also divorced.
Rahim’s younger brother also married an American model, Kristin White, and his sister married male model Mark Boyden. Both have since divorced their spouses.
